On Sunday, October 17th we will bring Escape Racism to the Turin International Book Fair 2021, the most important Italian event in the field of book publishing.
The theme: Supernova Life. The supernova is a stellar explosion of enormous power: its light can illuminate everything which would otherwise remain in darkness, but its energy also has a destructive force. How would the planet we become familiar with again look like after a time internal that would have been unimaginable just a few years ago? Will we be able to untangle the knots, remote and recent, or will we face multiplications of new problems? As per usual, the Book Fair convenes the finest minds scattered around the world, but it would be done under completely different circumstances that might have been anticipated a year and a half ago. Environmental protection, biodiversity, the resilience of liberal democracies in an increasingly complex world, economic reconstruction and social justice, the relationship between the individual and the community, between illness and cure, between life and death (and possible sudden rebirths), the relationship with science and technology, gender issues, minority rights, freedom of expression, the way in which Italy and Europe are redefining their role and identity in a rapidly changing world stage. These will be some of the themes of the Book Fair. But above all: what has happened to us? What is really happening to our inner world? How are the relationships between us changing? Those who deal with literature, those who write novels and poems have always wondered about these issues, and they usually know more than the era in which they live.
Due to the Covid19 health emergency that we have been experiencing for almost two years, we can see the escalation of discriminations on all fronts and, unfortunately, at all levels, as it could be expected after adverse events of this magnitude.
It is our responsibility now to mend the fractures and heal the wounds of our society that was partly united and strengthened, and partly ready to blame those who were different from them in ethnicity, nationality or ideology.
We are struggling, what about you?
